A fan-made port of the legendary MMORPG World of Warcraft has landed on the Sega Dreamcast, a console that debuted in 1999. The project, created by homebrew developer Cypress, is now in alpha but already fully playable, fitting onto two discs except for a few inaccessible zones like the Game Master island.
The port supports all classes and abilities from the original vanilla version, runs online via the Broadband Adapter, and adds custom Dreamcast‑specific content: new pets, mounts, recipes, quests with nods to ChuChu Rocket! and Phantasy Star Online. It also backports 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 arenas from later expansions, offers double‑speed XP gain up to level 20, and features simplified graphics with low‑poly textures that have been refined after community feedback. Despite the Dreamcast’s modest 16 MB of RAM, the game runs remarkably stable.
Unaffiliated with Blizzard, this unofficial project quickly became one of the most impressive achievements of the Dreamcast homebrew scene in recent years, proving that the console’s swan song still has plenty of surprises for gamers.
